Who are you, and what do you do?

My name is Bill Keller and I am the Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer of Independence Bank. Independence Bank is a $915 million bank located in Havre, MT with branches in Conrad, Malta, Glasgow, Poplar, Scobey and an LPO in Great Falls. I own a farm, coach a youth travel basketball team and volunteer for various community organizations.

What is one habit of yours that helps you be productive?

I return everyone’s phone call within 24 hours and try and answer all emails every day.

What is your morning routine and how does it help you get the most out of your day?

Generally rise at 5:04 am, workout for an hour and like to be to work between 7:00 & 7:30 most days. This allows me to feel like I am starting ahead each day instead of behind.

In the last few years, what lifestyle, habit or behavior change has had the biggest positive impact on your life?

Changing my morning routine, being more disciplined in exercising and allowing myself to enjoy time away from work.

When you feel unfocused, what do you do?

Workout, slow my work and mind down. Read slower and more carefully and in wore case scenario, sometimes just take a vacation day.

What is one piece of software or a web service that you get immense value out of? How do you use it?

My cell phone. I browse several different apps to stay informed at a high level on a variety of topics. I have no specific favorite, however its important to stay informed of your surroundings.

What is the one book you recommend most often and why?

I don’t have one. I don’t read many books, but I subscribe to and read many different articles regarding my profession and/or things that interest me.

What advice would you give a smart and ambitious recent college graduate? What advice should they ignore?

Don’t take “no” for an answer and don’t accept an entry level position unless you absolutely have to. Generally you will only surround yourself with the most dissatisfied people in the organization and it will be difficult to show your talents.

Be aggressive and indicate that you want to start in a position where there is opportunity to grow.

What is your favorite quote, one you aim to live by?

Don’t be a “woulda, coulda, shoulda story”. Everyone has one. Always know you gave your best effort.
