Who are you, and what do you do?
I am the Assistant Director of Marketing for the Grizzly Athletics.
What has been one insight or lesson that has been most helpful in your career?
Get outside of your comfort zone, you learn more by doing that. The Marketing industry is a very extroverted industry.
What has been your favorite mistake? A mistake that in retrospect led to a great lesson and progress.
Working with different head coaches in the industry has given me an opportunity to learn from differing thoughts. With coaches challenging more from the athletics division and getting criticized for not giving them what they want is the hardest lesson to learn.
Project forward ten years. How will your industry or field be fundamentally different then? What opportunities do you see?
With the marketing field, I believe that it is going to become more to the digital advertising and changing budgets to different online analytics such as google analytics. This will in turn give sports and marketing in general a bigger fan base to work with.
What are some bad recommendations you hear in your profession or area of expertise?
That marketing is a silo, marketing is more thought of as a community outreach. We work with different branches of businesses and the community as a whole.
In the last two years, what have you become better at saying no to?
How to navigate coaching staff with graphic requests.
What is the one book you recommend most often and why?
Secrets to Becoming a Leader: Discover a Lifetime of Lessons by Tom Osborne
This has really helped me with leadership in not only in sports but in life.
What advice would you give a smart and ambitious recent college graduate? What advice should they ignore?
I would give recent college graduates the advice to not be afraid to take a chance on something. You never really know the outcomes of what will happen.
The advice I would say to ignore is that of going for the glamorous job. The highest paying job might not be the right fit for you as a person.
What is your favorite quote, one you aim to live by?
“We are making memories”
